Felt Making in Katmandu

OzKat has been manufacturing in Nepal for 18 years now, mainly with one supplier which we have helped improve their business as well as ours…and together we have grown!

We operate on a Fair Trading basis whereby everyone is paid fairly and the working conditions are good and we both mutually benefit one another’s lives.

We have seen Som get married, have a gorgeous daughter - who is now 16 years old…we have been fortunate enough to have been invited along to various Hindu Ceremonies and weddings…...we are treated as part of the family!! And feel privileged to have participated in & witnessed these parts of Nepali life.

All the women that do the knitting are paid fairly and this has empowered many women to help support their families from home whilst the husband works, it also gives a single mother the opportunity to earn her own living….in a land where there are no pensions or baby bonus!

The wool is New Zealand wool which is spun & dyed in Nepal and is then used in all the knitted woollen garments and hats, hand warmers, slippers & sox and felt products.

Temple in Katmandu

We have for many years stayed in a beautiful Tibetan Hotel called The Utse and have become close friends with the Tibetan family - Diki & Ugen and have listened to their stories and partaken in their Tibetan Rituals & Ceremonies for the New Year and regular trips to the most beautiful Buddhist Stupa ever! - Boudhanath. - as seen on our Home Page.

We love Kathmandu and the people and are thankful to support our lives from this connection.

We support a local charity - KAT - the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre for the Humane treatment of the street dogs and collect donations at our weekly markets & festivals and take every penny and hand it over to them, along with our contributions, when we go there each February.

There are many organisations supporting children & orphanages but there is very little done for the innocent animals.

This organisation was formed in 2004 by an English woman, Jan Salter, and is totally self funded. We have brochures on this organisation and if you are interested or would like to make a donation please email us on: info@ozkat.com
or you can also contact them directly on: katcentre@wlink.com.np.

In all my years to going to Kathmandu
I am so glad to have finally found a group to help the animals.
